I backed Mythwind on a whim because the farming and town-building idea gave me a bit of a Stardew Valley feeling, and then pretty much left it alone until the box arrived. So I’m going into this unboxing knowing very little, with my four-year-old son Ethan helping me punch everything out. He’s already declared himself a little bit of an expert at board games, which is good because I haven’t even read the rules yet.
We open the character journals, look through the components, and start putting together the Farmer, Crafter, Merchant, and Ranger trays. I keep calling the Ranger the Hunter and Ethan keeps correcting me. He’s also got his own ideas about where things belong, including pushing the little cardboard squares into the dice slots… which I then have to get back out. We spend a lot of time figuring out what goes where, and at some point my plan to just open the box turns into reading setup and storage instructions so we can put it all away again.
By the end, we’ve punched the components and gotten things back in the box, with a few storage guesses that I’ll need to sort out when I actually play. Ethan’s ready to tell the camera it’s a long, boring game, and I have to remind him we haven’t played it yet. We just punched stuff out. He still sticks around for the goodbye and comes up with a website name for our videos, so apparently we have that sorted before the rules.

Disagree With Me Here
Discussion and disagreement are welcome here — that's what makes talking about games fun. Just keep it kind. Attacks on people, not ideas, will be removed.
