I started the DK Challenge because Nintendo offered physical cards for finishing it, which apparently is enough to get me playing Donkey Kong games at two in the morning. I grew up with Donkey Kong Country, but I haven’t played most of this stuff in years, and some of the Game Boy games are basically new to me. The plan was to get through the classic challenges before starting Bananza, preferably by restarting when I messed up instead of rewinding every jump, which is how I ended up playing the challenges.
The mine cart went fine. Then the Donkey Kong Country boss fight fooled me with its fake ending (again!), Donkey Kong Land made me question what I could even land on, and the barrel sections later on kept finding one more way to send me back to the beginning. I did briefly use rewind to figure out what was happening in Land, so this isn’t a clean no-rewind run. But I kept going, got through all the classic challenges, and finished the last fireball section on the first attempt. Now I just have to start Donkey Kong Bananza and find out how much game I’ve signed myself up for… all for a set of cards.
